Scientific Name

Fimbristylis ferruginea

Fimbristylis polytrichoides

Family

Cyperaceae

Description

These perennial sedges differ in height, Fimbristylis ferruginea being the taller species of the two.

F polytrichoides is small and densely tufted (5-30 cm tall). Flowers appear on a single spikelet, sometimes on one or two lateral spikelets.

F ferruginea is tufted (20-65 cm tall) with very short rhizomes. It has a brown membranous sheath around its stems. The spikelets are solitary, brown, and with many flowers that usually number i-io (sometimes up to 25, but this number is very rare).

Rusty sedge has distinctive rusty brown flowers.

Rusty sedge flowers from May to July.
